Reconditioning Overview & Tips
For your 1929-1955 Chevrolet Straight Six Engine

II: ENGINE REMOVAL AND REINSTALLATION
Drain
the cooling system and remove both hood and front bumper. Disconnect
lights and horn wires at junction blocks. On later models having
inside hood latch, disconnect the latch wire and conduit at the
latch. On older models remove the grille and radiator. Newer models:
Unbolt fender and radiator connections and remove both fenders
and radiator assembly. If battery is in engine compartment, remove
same. Disconnect wires to generator, starting motor and distributor.
Remove ignition coil mounting screws and place coil and its armored
cable out of way. Disconnect the fuel line at pump, both throttle
and choke controls and the windshield wiper hose. Remove two nuts
which fasten exhaust pipe to the manifold.
If
car has Vacuumatic shift, remove vacuum and air lines from vacuum
cylinder; remove floor mat and cover from over transmission and
working from underneath car, remove the two bolts which fasten
the halves of reactionary assembly metal boot and remove outer
half of boot; loosen bolt which clamps reactionary lever assembly
to transmission operating shaft and carefully drive lever assembly
from shaft; remove cotter key from transmission end of selector
rod and disconnect rod from lever; remove three cap screws attaching
vacuum cylinder bracket to side of transmission and move the assembly
away from transmission.
On
floor shift models (1939 and earlier) remove floor mat and cover
from over transmission and remove shift lever from cover.
Remove
cotter key from clutch pedal link and take off link and pedal
return spring. Remove bolts from universal
ball retainer and slide retainer and ball back on propeller shaft.

Remove
cap screws (4) from universal joint trunnion bearings and remove
the trunnion bearings. Remove transmission support bolts (4).
Remove front and side engine mounting bolts and the bolts from
starter cross shaft.
The
engine and transmission assembly is now ready for removal. Place
rope sling around engine or attach lifting eye in place of cylinder.
To
reinstall, follow reverse of the removal procedure.
