Did You Know ?

July 13, 2001
Last week we received an inquiry from Randy of Ohio:

Q. Can you tell me about the first V-8 offered by Chevrolet? I have a bet with a friend that it was the 265 cubic inch introduced in 1955.

A. Well, Randy, you owe your friend because he's right. Chevrolet introduced a production V-8 in 1917 and officially put it in the 1918 model year, calling the car the Chevrolet Eight. Labeled the D-Series, this ran in production from late 1917 though early in 1919.

During the years of 1917 only 2, 781 were produced, 71 in 1919. The cars were priced in 1918 at $1,550 new, rising from 1917's price of $1,350.
