Did You Know ?

July 20, 2001
Last week we received an inquiry from Tony of Wisconsin:

Q. Can you tell me if 1958 was the first year for the Impala? Some suggest that there is a Bel-Air Impala model that predates the Impala.

A. Tony, you seem to be right, but so are your friends to a certain extent. You see, in 1958 Chevrolet expanded the Bel-air line to include a Impala styling package. The Impala was available as a 2 dr. model in either coupe (hardtop) or convertible (softtop) and came with either a straight - 6 cylinder or a V-8 engine.

And just so you know Tony, the Impala was officially its own model in 1959 - you could buy it in either 2 or 4 doors, a total of 8 different style/engine combinations were offered.
