Did You Know ?

October 15, 2001
Last week we received an inquiry from Marcus of Houston, Texas:

Q. Did Chevrolet make a Superior model in 1922? I could have sworn the Superior's first year was 1923 and yet I've heard otherwise.

A. No, there wasn't a 1922 Superior. At least not as far as the manufacturing side of Chevrolet is concerned. Of course, marketing had other ideas!

The sales department decided in spring of 1922 to begin using the name in place of "Four Ninety." Evidently the reputation of the Four Ninety was going more and more downhill! The nameplate on the car still read Four Ninety / 490.

For the record, nowhere does Chevrolet service manuals or parts books mention 1922 having a Superior Model.
